Can you imagine...?





     Hey guys! Okay, so my stupid blogger keeps deleting this draft so i'm typing it AGAIN. So just a warning it will be shorter than the FIRST one I typed. So from the title you are probably thinking "Imagine what?!". Well, can you imagine your imagination? Does that make sense...? No, well you can deal. (; So let's get started!
   
The definition of Imagination is- The process of thinking up ideas or images. Did you know that the word imagination comes from the Latin word for mental image? Or that imagination is basically the opposite of perception? Well you do now. If you don't know what perception is, it's when your brain takes input from your five senses to form a picture of the world around you. So perception is pretty much how you understand reality. So you have an orange in your hand, your brain is perceiving the way it looks, feels, smells, and the way it tastes.

     So now you're laying in bed and you remember how the orange felt or even tasted even though it happened long ago. This is a memory, and your memories are a form of passive imagination, they're made up of events and sensations that you have experienced in the past. Let's say that you didn't think of an orange. You thought of a fruit that you made up and you have never seen, touched or tasted. That would be called active imagination. You most likely use you active imagination when you daydream.

     Imagination is actually a vital part of the "artistic process". You know, painters use their imaginations to transfer what they see in real life to what they want their canvas to look like. You may look at a painting and think how did they transform that from reality to art? Well it may not look realistic but they got their inspiration from real things, like a tree, or an orange.
     Not only painters use their imaginations though. People use their imaginations to think of a new way to style their hair or a new way to cook a meal. It all begins in your imagination & if you think about it right now your brain is learning about itself.... Weird right? Haha, moving on.
                                              
     There are lots of theories to why we have an imagination & many philosophers/ psychologists believe it helps people experience empathy for one another. Empathy is when you put yourself in someone else's place and imagine what they could be thinking or feeling. Imagination also helps us with problem solving since we can picture reality in our minds.

It's Electro! Boogie Woogie Woogie Woogie! Magnectic! Spectrum! YEAH!

 Hey guys! How's it goin'? Oh me? I'm good! Just have the "It's Electric" song in my head! It is so catchy. Anyways, believe it or not this song as a teeny weeny bit to do with our upcoming topic! Let's get started!

Okay, so what do you think ES (Electromagnetic Spectrum) is?

And we're back! So the ES is: The range of wavelengths or frequencies over which electromagnetic radiation extends. Do you know how mechanical waves need a medium to move through? Well if not you do now. Anyways, electromagnetic waves don't need a medium to move through, in fact they can move through empty space!


There are several properties to the ES and some you may have already heard or know about. Below are the waves in longest to shortest wavelength. These waves are organized by how much energy each carries.

  • Radio waves
  • Microwaves
  • Infra-red
  • Visible Light
  • Ultra-violet
  • X-rays
  • Gamma rays

Radio waves: It's has the lowest frequency but the longest wavelength. The radio waves have catagories just like the ES does. There are FM, AM, and TV waves. AM is low, TV high, and FM would be considered medium.


Microwaves: They are used in microwaves (duh) and airplane radars. They are also radio waves and heat up food in a cool way! They radiation from the microwave goes into your food and the water molecules in the food absorb the heat. This causes the heat to build up and warm-up your food!

Infra-red: These are used in remotes for tvs, cars, garage doors, and etc. When an object produces heat they are often produced, and sometimes you can feel them. These are also used to take pictures called Thermographs.


Visible Light Waves: Well obviously this is the light that you can see. Did you know that the colors of the rainbow (ROY G BIV) are actually arranged in order from lowest to highest energy? That's something I learned!


Ultra-violet waves: A lot of UV waves come from the sun and can cause bad things like cancer. :O
Thankfully though the ozone stops enough of the UV waves from getting to us and we are destroying it. (smh)


X-rays: You probably know what this one does if you have ever broken a bone, or your just an overachiever. *cough Fatima cough*
JUST KIDDING. Anyways, doctors only use a little bit of the X-rays to see through your bones. IF we didn't have calcium in our bones then the waves wouldn't stop and they wouldn't be able to see our bones.



Gamma Ray waves: Last but not least....well.... not in the energy. It has the shortest wavelength and the highest frequency. These waves are used in nuclear bombs. (AWH!*sad face*) These waves are absorbed by our atmosphere and a lot of them come from outer space. They can do good though, these waves can be used to destroy cancer cells! (YAY!)

I know you can EAR me!

Hey guys, whats up? How are you doing? Oh, cool. I really don't care...hah.... How am I? Well, my ears are KILLING me! We were just listening to some high frequencies that only kids can hear and it has something to do with our upcoming topic! So today we will be taking about your ears and what goes on inside them. Well, lets get started!

The ear is divided up into three parts, the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. The outer ear is the only part you can see and it is made up of cartlage. You also have these ridges which make the sound waves smaller and go into your inner ear.
The middle ear contains the stirrup, anvil, eardrum and hammer. The stirrup, anvil, and hammer just so happen to be the three smallest bones in your entire body! Isn't that cool? Also all the action happens here. The sound (a vibrational disturbance in the air) travels into your ear and hits the eardrum. This acts like an actual drum and vibrates rapidly. The vibrations make the hammer move very quickly also and it hits the anvil. The anvil then sends out the signals or vibrations, or whatever you wanna call them, to these tiny nerve fibers and they get tickled and send a signal vibration wave thing to our brain. Then our brain determines what sound it is and how we reconize it.
 
Now to the inner ear... So the inner ear is where these tiny little nerve fibers are located. The process i said above it may seem complicated and long but it only takes about .01 of a second for it to work!


Okay, so next I will be going over Sign Language. What do you think it would be like to be deaf? To not be able to listen to your friends conversations and listen to your favorite music? Well, I don't know about you but my life would be pretty awful. That's why I think about how my friend Celine (not at Shriner) deals with all of that. Her whole family is deaf. Her mom, dad, step-mom, step-dad, dog, and if i am not mistaken her brother too. There are many ways to go deaf but i will only name a few. You can burst your eardrum from high music etc. It can be heredity, and you can just get to many ear infections and it can cause perminate hearing loss.  It must be pretty hard for her not to just talk to her mom one-on-one without using her hands. Kuddos to you Celine!
So this is what the alphabet looks like in Sign Language. It's actually not as complicated as it might look like to learn. I learned it in 6th grade just from watching a movie! You can try it if you want, its fun! This is not how deaf people talk to each other they actually have hand motions for words and phrases! I will post a video below. We'll that's all for this blog.
